Snapchat has announced the end of its unlimited free storage for Memories, the feature that lets users save old photos and videos. Going forward, users with more than 5GB of saved data will have to pay to access their older Memories.
Snap, the app’s parent company, said the change will roll out gradually worldwide, but did not reveal the exact cost for UK users. The company noted that users have collectively saved over one trillion Memories since the feature launched in 2016.
“For most Snapchatters who have less than 5GB of Memories, nothing will change,” the company stated. “Those exceeding the limit can upgrade their storage through new plans — 100GB, 250GB with Snapchat+, or 5TB with Snapchat Platinum.”
Snapchat will also offer 12 months of temporary storage for any content that crosses the 5GB limit.
Screenshots circulating on X showed an alleged payment page listing prices in Australian dollars, with the cheapest plan costing 2.99 AUD per month for 100GB of storage.
The update has sparked backlash online, with many users threatening to quit the app rather than pay for saving their old Snaps.
