A Chinese court has sentenced former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Tang Renjian, to death on bribery charges, though the execution has been suspended for two years. The ruling was announced on Sunday by a court in Jilin province, marking another high-profile case in China’s sweeping anti-corruption drive. Tang had already been expelled from the Communist Party in November 2024.
According to court findings, Tang accepted bribes worth 268 million yuan (approximately 37.6 million US dollars) between 2007 and 2024 while holding multiple official positions. The bribes included cash and valuable property, which he admitted to receiving. His confession played a role in the judgment, but the scale of his crimes was deemed “extremely serious” by the court.

The investigation into Tang began six months after his party expulsion, led by China’s top anti-corruption watchdog. He was removed from office following the inquiry. Analysts have described the swift proceedings as unusual but comparable to investigations against former defense ministers Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe, who also faced corruption-related probes.
This development is part of President Xi Jinping’s broader crackdown on corruption within state institutions, launched in 2020. The campaign has focused on ensuring loyalty and transparency across law enforcement, prosecutors, and the judiciary. Xi has consistently argued that corruption represents the gravest threat to the Communist Party’s survival and legitimacy.
Tang Renjian previously served as governor of Gansu province from 2017 to 2020 before taking up the role of Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. His downfall highlights the growing intensity of Beijing’s anti-graft operations, which have expanded to target officials at the highest levels of government. Observers believe these cases demonstrate Xi’s determination to root out corruption from the top down.

In January this year, President Xi Jinping reaffirmed his stance by warning that corruption remains a worsening challenge within the Communist Party. The sentencing of Tang reinforces his message that no official, regardless of rank, will be spared in China’s relentless anti-corruption campaign.
