GHQ attack case nears verdict as final witnesses summoned

Published on: September 27, 2025 3:34 PM

RAWALPINDI: The high-profile GHQ attack case has entered its final phase in an anti-terrorism court (ATC), with the last three witnesses summoned to appear at the next hearing. On Saturday, ATC Judge Amjad Ali Shah recorded statements from three prosecution witnesses during the latest court session.

The court also rejected a petition filed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan seeking to halt the trial. However, a notice was issued to the prosecution regarding a request to recall eight earlier witnesses for re-examination. This move could impact the conclusion of the trial if granted.

During Saturday’s proceedings, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Akbar Abbas and Inspectors Ismat Kamal and Tehzeebul Hassan gave testimonies. They presented key evidence in court, including sticks, flags, a police helmet, a lighter, and broken parts of a military statue recovered from the accused. Inspector Kamal also submitted details about a PTI leadership meeting held at Chakri Interchange.

With 44 witness statements already recorded in the case, the court has now summoned the final three: DSP Mirza Javed, Inspector Nazim Shah, and Inspector Yaqoob Shah. Their testimonies will be heard on September 30, when the next hearing is scheduled.

The case stems from the May 9, 2023, nationwide protests triggered by the arrest of Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust case. Violent demonstrations erupted across the country, targeting military and civilian infrastructure. The General Headquarters (GHQ) gate in Rawalpindi and the Lahore Corps Commander’s residence (Jinnah House) were attacked. At least 8 people were killed and 290 injured, while over 1,900 suspects were arrested nationwide for arson, vandalism, and attacks on state property.
