UNITED NATIONS —US President Donald Trump delivered a combative address at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, sharply criticizing the global body, dismissing climate change concerns, and blaming migration for destabilizing Western societies.
Calling the UN “an institution of empty words,” Trump questioned its purpose, saying it had failed to prevent global conflicts and accusing it of “funding an assault on Western countries” by supporting migrants. He described climate change as “the greatest con job ever” and urged nations to avoid what he termed a “green scam.”
The US president also criticized countries recognizing Palestinian statehood, saying such moves amounted to a “reward” for Hamas. While meeting later with leaders of Muslim-majority states, including Pakistan, Trump called on them to play a role in ending the Gaza conflict, though he stressed the priority should be the return of Israeli hostages.
Trump’s remarks drew sharp responses from diplomats and observers, who warned that his climate stance could undermine global efforts to tackle environmental crises, particularly in vulnerable countries such as Pakistan. Critics also argued that the US itself has long been a key player in global interventions that have fueled instability and migration.
Despite the strong rhetoric, US officials later said Washington remained committed to advancing its interests through international engagement, even as Trump insisted the global order must change.
