The local government (LG) representatives in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have once again announced plans to take to the streets.
On September 30, local body members from across the province will stage a sit-in protest in front of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly in Peshawar. A committee has also been formed to organize an All Parties Conference on the issue.
Azizullah Khan Marwat, spokesperson for the Local Councils Association on Sunday said, local representatives have repeatedly staged demonstrations demanding a strong and empowered local government system, delivery of municipal and social services to citizens and protection of public rights.
He said that despite multiple negotiations with Chief Minister Sardar Ali Amin Gandapur, during which promises were made regarding constitutional powers and release of development funds, the provincial government failed to fulfill its commitments.
Marwat added that a massive protest sit-in would begin on September 30 and all mayors, tehsil chairmen, and village and neighborhood council members across the province had been instructed to accelerate preparations.
Thousands of representatives from various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to converge on Peshawar. Meanwhile, an All Parties Conference on local government issues is also expected to be held next week.
A committee has been constituted for this purpose, with Haroon Sifat, Tehsil Chairman of Pishtakhara Peshawar, appointed as convener. Other members include Humayun Khan, Adil Khan, Ghulam Haqqani, Rafiullah Khan and several others.
