Qatar’s emir departs for UN general assembly in New York

Published on: September 21, 2025 3:58 PM

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani has departed for New York to participate in the 80th United Nations General Assembly session, the Amiri Diwan confirmed on Sunday. His visit comes at a time when global attention is focused on mounting humanitarian and security challenges, particularly in the Middle East.

World leaders are gathering in New York as the war between Israel and Hamas nears its second year, with no significant progress toward peace. The prolonged conflict has intensified instability in the region, while worsening humanitarian suffering in Gaza. Sheikh Tamim’s participation signals Qatar’s continued diplomatic engagement on pressing international and regional crises.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with global hunger monitors warning that famine has already taken hold and could spread further by the end of the month. Civilian populations are enduring immense hardship, and aid agencies continue to call for urgent international action. Qatar has consistently advocated for humanitarian relief and a ceasefire in the besieged territory.

During his engagements at the UN, the Emir is expected to stress the urgent need for peace and dialogue in conflict zones while underlining the importance of multilateral cooperation. His address will likely highlight the critical role of international solidarity in tackling both regional conflicts and global challenges such as climate change and sustainable development.

The Emir’s presence at the UNGA will also reinforce Qatar’s active role as a mediator in regional disputes and humanitarian crises. By participating in this global platform, Qatar seeks to amplify calls for peace, justice, and international cooperation at a time when unity is further needed.
