Russia hits Ukraine with 580 drones

Published on: September 20, 2025 3:06 PM

Russia launched a large-scale drone and missile strike on Ukraine overnight, killing three people and injuring many others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the attack targeted homes, infrastructure, and factories in several regions. He added that Russia used about 580 drones and 40 missiles in this latest assault. The attack began late Friday and continued through the night. Air sirens stayed on for over 11 hours in some areas.

In Dnipro, a missile carrying cluster bombs hit a residential apartment building. One person died and at least 26 were hurt in the city. Emergency teams arrived quickly and helped injured people. Photos showed destroyed roofs, broken windows, and rescuers carrying out medical aid. Two other deaths were reported in the Chernihiv and Khmelnytskyi regions. Local officials confirmed damage and casualties in these areas as well.

The Ukrainian air force said it shot down 552 drones and 31 missiles. Military experts noted that Russia’s attacks now come in much larger waves. Earlier in the war, Russia launched dozens of drones per strike. Now, hundreds are used in a single attack. This shift in tactics makes defense harder and damages more likely.

Poland also responded to the attack by sending out aircraft to guard its airspace. Russia’s missiles had reached near Ukraine’s western border with Poland. The Polish military said the situation was under control, but they stayed alert. Nearby NATO allies are also watching the border closely.

President Zelenskiy again called on Western allies to send more air defense systems. He said Ukraine has proven it can protect itself, but more help is needed. Zelenskiy also asked for stronger sanctions against Russia. He said Ukraine and Europe must stand together to build a reliable defense. The war continues to put civilians at the center of rising tensions.
