UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged the world not to be “intimidated” by Israel over its actions in the West Bank. In a recent interview, he condemned Israel’s “creeping annexation” of Palestinian territories. His comments came ahead of a major UN gathering where 10 countries plan to recognize Palestine. Israel has warned of retaliation if Western nations move forward. But Guterres said the risk of doing nothing is even greater.
The UN chief stressed that pressure from the international community is essential. “These actions would continue with or without us,” he said. He added that recognition of Palestine could help mobilize global resistance to Israeli expansion. Guterres also denounced the ongoing Gaza conflict. He called the destruction “horrendous” and described conditions there as the worst in his time as Secretary-General.
The Israeli government, especially far-right leaders like Bezalel Smotrich, has pushed for full annexation of the West Bank. Smotrich says this would end any chance of a Palestinian state. The United States has avoided direct criticism of Israel’s military actions. It has also opposed efforts to recognize Palestinian statehood. Meanwhile, more countries are backing France’s call for recognition.
Guterres also sounded the alarm on global climate goals. He said the world is on the brink of failing to meet the 1.5°C target set in the Paris Agreement. Many countries, including China and EU members, have yet to submit updated climate plans. The UN fears that climate diplomacy is losing ground amid global conflicts and economic uncertainty.
With COP30 approaching in Brazil, Guterres urged immediate climate action. He said governments must commit to sharp emission cuts across all sectors. Current estimates show the world has already warmed by 1.4°C. Scientists warn the 1.5°C limit could be breached this decade. Guterres stressed this is not time to panic — but to act with determination and urgency.
