Sindh announces local by-election schedule for 52 seats

Published on: July 29, 2025 1:06 PM

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Sindh, has released the schedule for by-elections on 52 vacant local government seats across the province. Polling is set to take place on September 24, 2025 in various districts including Shikarpur, Kashmore, Ghotki, Sukkur, Naushahro Feroze, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, and Matiari, as well as in parts of Karachi such as West, East, and Keamari.

According to the ECP spokesperson, the nomination papers will be submitted from August 21 to 23, followed by the publication of the initial list of candidates on August 25. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be carried out between August 26 and 28, while candidates can withdraw their nominations by September 8. Election symbols will be allotted on September 9.

In Karachi Division, five local government seats will see by-polls. These include the vice-chairman’s seat in UC-8 Sohrab Goth (District East), UC-10 Manghopir (District West), and UC-8 Baldia (Keamari District). Elections will also be held for the chairman and general member seats in UC-1 and UC-7 of Orangi Town.

To ensure transparency, the ECP has appointed returning officers (ROs) and district returning officers (DROs). Deputy commissioners of East, West, and Keamari districts will serve as DROs. The ECP has also placed restrictions on the announcement of new development projects and the use of government resources in these constituencies during the election period.

Moreover, the election commission has banned transfers and appointments of all government officials in the concerned constituencies until the conclusion of the by-elections. These measures aim to ensure a fair and unbiased electoral process throughout the province.
