Sugar prices in Karachi dropped by Rs10 per kilogram this week, bringing relief to consumers. Wholesale rates have fallen to Rs174 per kg, while retail prices now range between Rs180 and Rs185 in various markets across the city.
However, the situation in Punjab remains tense. The province is facing a sugar supply crisis as dealers and mills clash over newly set government rates. The federal government fixed prices at Rs165 for mills and Rs173 for retail, but sugar dealers claim that mills are still selling at Rs176 per kg.
Due to this price conflict, sugar deliveries in Punjab have been suspended. Some areas are now seeing prices spike to Rs200 per kg, leaving consumers frustrated. The deadlock is deepening concerns of a prolonged shortage.
Dealers have issued warnings that supply will remain halted unless mills comply with the government’s pricing. So far, no agreement has been reached between the parties involved. This standoff is impacting both availability and affordability in Punjab.
While Karachi sees short-term relief, the national outlook remains uncertain. Unless a settlement is reached soon, Punjab’s crisis could spread to other provinces, worsening inflation and disrupting daily life.
