Trump-Munir meeting sparks fresh India-US tensions amid China reset

Published on: July 21, 2025 3:43 PM

Tensions between India and the United States have deepened after US President Donald Trump hosted Pakistan’s military chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, at the White House. The rare meeting — held without any senior Pakistani civilian officials — was viewed by New Delhi as a provocative move, especially following a recent conflict between India and Pakistan. Indian officials said the gesture sent the wrong message and undermined bilateral trust built over decades of strategic cooperation.

The Trump-Munir meeting came shortly after violent clashes in May between the nuclear-armed neighbours, which resulted in a four-day exchange of missile, drone, and air strikes. India had launched attacks across the Line of Control in response to the killing of Hindu tourists in Kashmir. While both sides agreed to a ceasefire, tensions remain high. India blames Pakistan for backing cross-border terrorism, a claim Pakistan denies, saying India has no proof and is pushing a biased narrative.

Indian officials said they made private diplomatic protests to Washington following the meeting. According to sources, representatives from Prime Minister Modi’s office and the national security team called their US counterparts to express strong concerns. They warned that Washington’s growing closeness with Pakistan might damage long-standing strategic ties and impact cooperation on regional security. However, the US responded by saying it maintains independent relationships with both India and Pakistan.

This unexpected shift in US posture is also pushing India to rethink its approach toward China. According to analysts, New Delhi is considering relaxing investment restrictions from China as a counterbalance. The changing dynamics come amid Trump’s unpredictable policies, especially regarding tariffs and trade. Experts believe this uncertainty is now affecting India-US economic negotiations, which were already strained due to rising protectionism.

Furthermore, India fears any renewed US military support to Pakistan could be used against it if conflict flares up again. A Pakistani statement after the meeting said both sides discussed enhancing counter-terrorism cooperation and strengthening defense ties — a development that further alarmed Indian officials. As the geopolitical gameboard shifts, both India and the US are now navigating a more delicate and uncertain path in their partnership.
