The fourth spell of monsoon rains is set to begin today in Punjab, bringing heavy showers to multiple districts including Lahore, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi. According to the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), this spell will last until July 25 and is expected to be more intense than the previous ones, raising concerns of flooding.
The PDMA has warned of significant rainfall in areas such as Murree, Galiyat, Chakwal, Gujrat, Jhelum, Sargodha, and Mianwali. Rain is also forecasted for southern Punjab including Bahawalpur, Multan, and Dera Ghazi Khan. With rainfall expected across both upper and lower regions, authorities have urged the public to stay cautious.
Director General PDMA, Irfan Ali Kathia, issued a flood alert for Punjab’s rivers and streams. He expressed concern over rising water levels in the Ravi, Jhelum, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers. Meanwhile, the Indus River at Taunsa is already witnessing moderate flooding, with water flow exceeding 420,000 cusecs.
Following Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s directions, the provincial administration has been put on high alert. All deputy commissioners have been instructed to stay in the field and strictly implement Section 144 around rivers and stream banks to prevent public gatherings in vulnerable zones.
The PDMA has also instructed departments such as WASA, Rescue 1122, and local administrations to remain ready. Machinery is being deployed at choke points, drainage systems are being monitored, and generators have been prepared for emergency use. Swift action is the top priority during this critical time.
Lastly, the PDMA has urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and stay away from low-lying and flood-prone areas. Citizens are advised to follow weather updates and cooperate with authorities to ensure safety during this active monsoon phase.
