LAHORE – Heavy monsoon rains have wreaked havoc across Punjab, killing at least 27 people and injuring dozens in rain-related incidents, with Lahore suffering the highest number of casualties. Authorities have warned of continued downpours in the coming days.
In Lahore alone, 12 lives were lost due to roof collapses, electrocutions, and other accidents. Torrential rain overnight turned roads into flooded canals, causing severe disruptions in transportation and daily life across the city.
The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) recorded the highest rainfall at Pani Wala Talab with 171 mm, followed by Iqbal Town and Tajpura. Other cities, including Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad, also experienced intense rain and urban flooding.
Tragic incidents unfolded across the province. In Thokar Niaz Baig, five members of a family died when their roof collapsed. In separate incidents across Raiwind, Baghbanpura, and Harbanspura, more lives were lost, including children who were electrocuted.
Similar accidents occurred in Chishtian, Pakpattan, Haveli Lakha, and Faisalabad, where heavy rain caused multiple homes to collapse. Many of the injured remain in critical condition as rescue teams continue their operations amid difficult conditions.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast more rain over the next 24 hours, warning of flash floods and landslides in some areas. NDMA has issued alerts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, urging residents to take safety precautions.
