Heavy rains hit Lahore as Punjab activates monsoon emergency plan

Published on: June 29, 2025 4:20 PM

LAHORE – A strong thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rain lashed Lahore and surrounding areas on Sunday, breaking the long spell of humidity and bringing much-needed relief to residents. However, the storm also caused significant power disruptions across the city.

Key areas like Shimla Pahari, Mall Road, Gulberg, Muslim Town, and Allama Iqbal Town were among those hit by the downpour. As winds intensified, 178 LESCO feeders tripped, plunging several neighborhoods into darkness. Crews are working to restore electricity in the affected zones.

In response, the Punjab government has activated its monsoon emergency plan. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to provide real-time updates on the plan’s execution and ensured that District Emergency Operation Centers would remain active around the clock across all districts.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued detailed safety instructions to help residents stay safe during the monsoon season. Officials have been told to identify weak and hazardous buildings, while people living in dangerous structures have been urged to relocate immediately.

Maryam Nawaz emphasized full preparedness of deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, and rescue departments. She also appealed to the public to strictly follow government-issued safety guidelines, stressing that protecting lives remains the top priority.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a countrywide alert warning of more heavy rainfall. It also raised concerns about potential flooding in Gilgit-Baltistan due to melting glaciers. Emergency teams nationwide are now on high alert to respond swiftly to any crisis.
