Iran has sharply criticized the United States at the United Nations Security Council, accusing Washington of aiding Israeli military strikes. Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said the U.S. was “fully complicit” in Israel’s aggression. He warned that those supporting Israel, especially the U.S., must accept full responsibility for the consequences. Iran also declared that talks with the U.S. over its nuclear programme are now “meaningless.”
The U.S. denied being involved in the attacks but admitted knowing about them in advance. American officials urged Iran to return to negotiations and warned against further escalation. Senior U.S. official McCoy Pitt said Iran “would be wise” to continue diplomatic talks. President Trump confirmed that Iran had been given a 60-day deadline to strike a nuclear deal, which expired last week.
Iran’s outrage followed deadly Israeli strikes across its territory that killed senior IRGC commanders and nuclear scientists. In response, Iran fired dozens of ballistic missiles at Israeli cities and military sites. Tehran said 78 people were killed in the Israeli attacks, while Israel reported at least 34 injuries from Iran’s retaliation. The strikes severely damaged Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility and hit other sites in Fordow and Isfahan.
At the UN meeting, both Iranian and Israeli envoys traded accusations and threats. Israel’s Ambassador Danny Danon claimed Iran had been preparing for war. He defended the Israeli strikes as a move to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Iran argued that Israel’s actions aimed to destroy peace efforts and push the region into a wider conflict.
The future of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks now appears uncertain. A sixth round of talks was scheduled in Oman, but may be cancelled. Iran’s foreign ministry said diplomacy is no longer possible while Israel continues to launch attacks with American backing. Iranian officials also reached out to the UN Secretary-General, calling for immediate international action against Israeli aggression.
