PM Shehbaz pledges Rs250 billion for Balochistan development

Published on: June 1, 2025 4:14 PM

QUETTA – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a massive Rs250 billion federal package for Balochistan on Saturday, aimed at addressing the province’s development needs and infrastructure gaps. Speaking at a grand jirga in Quetta, he promised swift action and transparent use of funds.

Out of the total, Rs70 billion will go to a solarisation project to improve energy access in remote areas, while Rs150 billion has been allocated for the construction of National Highway N25. The funds will be drawn from savings generated by a drop in global petroleum prices, the prime minister said.

Sharif emphasized that 25% of the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) — worth Rs1 trillion — has been dedicated to Balochistan this year. He highlighted past initiatives, including scholarships and hospital projects, to show his continued commitment to the province’s development.

Condemning acts of terrorism in the region, the prime minister blamed foreign-backed groups for attempts to destabilize Pakistan. He praised the Pakistan Army for maintaining peace and applauded Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for leading successful military operations earlier in May.

Addressing military officers at the Command and Staff College, Sharif spoke about new threats facing Pakistan, such as hybrid warfare and economic disruption. He urged all national institutions to stay prepared and united in defending the country.

Sharif also pointed to recent economic gains, including a 28% rise in tax revenue, reduced inflation, and a stable currency. He credited anti-smuggling efforts and strategic alliances with countries like China, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar for supporting Pakistan in tough times.
