ISLAMABAD, May 20 — The federal cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has decided to extend the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu following the completion of his service term. The extension comes in recognition of his critical role in Operation Bunyad-e-Marsous, where the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) played a decisive part under his command.
During the cabinet session, leaders unanimously praised the air chief’s leadership, particularly his strategic planning and operational execution during the recent defense operation that inflicted heavy damage on hostile forces. The cabinet highlighted that such military continuity was essential in safeguarding national interests and ensuring stability in the region.
Air Chief Sidhu has served as the 16th Chief of Air Staff since March 19, 2021, when he succeeded Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan. Over his tenure, he has overseen modernization of the air force, combat readiness drills, and enhanced coordination with ground and naval forces—strengthening Pakistan’s joint defense posture.
The decision to retain him follows a broader reshaping of military leadership, including the promotion of Army Chief General Asim Munir to Field Marshal. Both appointments reflect the government’s resolve to reward operational success and maintain strategic leadership continuity in all military branches.
Air Chief Sidhu’s tenure extension is seen as a stabilizing move in light of current regional tensions, particularly with India. Defense analysts note that his continued presence at the helm of the PAF will help sustain momentum in key operations and ensure preparedness in an evolving security environment.
