Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani on Tuesday criticized Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza, calling them a serious blow to peace efforts. His remarks came shortly after the release of US-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander, which had initially raised hopes for progress in mediation.
Speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum, Sheikh Mohammed said, “When Edan Alexander was released, we thought it could be a turning point to end this tragedy. Instead, it triggered even more violent attacks.” He accused Israel of showing “irresponsible and aggressive behavior” that is actively damaging any chance of lasting peace in the region.
The statement follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s pledge to take full control of Gaza. This came as Israel expanded its offensive, leading to the deaths of at least 44 Palestinians in recent days, according to local rescue teams.
Qatar, which has played a leading mediating role alongside Egypt and the United States, admitted the latest negotiation efforts had stalled. Sheikh Mohammed noted a “fundamental gap” between the warring sides. “One side wants a step-by-step deal leading to a broader resolution. The other just wants a one-time deal to end the war and free hostages.”
The Qatari official warned that unless this gap is bridged, peace remains out of reach — and ongoing military escalation only deepens the divide.
