LAHORE: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has announced that Civil Hospital Karachi will be renamed after Dr Ruth Pfau to honour her memory. “Dr Pfau was a symbol of pride for this province and for all of Pakistan”, Sindh CM said during the announcement. The late German born Pakistani humanitarian who died in Karachi on August 10th dedicated her life to controlling leprosy in Pakistan and it was due to her efforts that Pakistan was declared by WHO to be one of the first Asian countries with a controlled leprosy rate. Dr Ruth Pfau was laid to rest in Gora Qabristan in Karachi on Saturday following a state funeral which was attended by prominent government figures including President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain and Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair. Her services for humanity were recognised by various organisations and governments across the globe and she was awared prestigious national awards such as Sitara-e-Quaid-e-Azam in 1969, Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 1979, Hilal-e-Pakistan in 1989 and also Nishan-e-Quaid-e-Azam in 2010.
