PML-N women leaders take a dig at Maryam

Published on: December 22, 2023 3:59 AM

Senior women leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League objected to party’s Chief Organizer Maryam Nawaz after she heaped praise on former information minister Marriyum Aurangzed, Uzma Bukhari and Hina Parvez Butt during the a parliamentary board meeting held on Wednesday. The tense situation prompted party supremo Nawaz Sharif to calm down the situation. Sources disclosed that the acknowledgment for Hina Parvez Butt stirred a feeling of discomfort among several workers, urging them to put grievances in front of the top leadership. Senior leaders Tehmina Daultana and Madiha Niazi engaged in a confrontation with Maryam Nawaz, with women leaders expressing dissatisfaction, asserting that focusing on “make-up and branded clothes does not contribute to the party’s essence”. Madiha Niazi, a worker from Lahore, voiced her discontent directly to the leadership, addressing Nawaz Sharif and stating, “Mian Sahib, we are not anyone’s nieces and nephews; we do not even have a recommendation, which is why we are not being heard.” Madiha Niazi’s statement garnered applause from other women candidates. Emphasizing that the voices of women who made sacrifices were being suppressed, Madiha Niazi responded to Maryam Nawaz’s suggestion to sit down by asserting her determination not to compromise her sacrifices. She expressed her commitment to fulfilling her word, even if it meant expulsion. The meeting witnessed intense exchanges between Maryam Nawaz and senior League leader Tehmina Daultana. As Tehmina Daultana highlighted her accomplishments in her area, Maryam Nawaz questioned her contributions to the party. This led to a heated exchange, with Tehmina Daultana expressing frustration, stating that Maryam Nawaz would only acknowledge her efforts when she’s no longer present. Nawaz Sharif intervened, emphasizing the strength of women within the party. He acknowledged their pivotal role in the party’s progress, stating that the leaders owed their positions in the assemblies to these women. He reassured the women that they were respected, and their sacrifices were highly valued by the party.
