BEIJING: The innovative and road-spanning 22 metre (72 feet) long Chinese bus undergoes first test run this week.
The blue tunnel-like Transit Elevated Bus (TEB-1) can carry up to 300 passengers in one trip and travels over the road traffic, the state run Xinhua news agency said.
In the test in the northern city of Qinhuangdao on Tuesday, the bus moved slowly along a 300 metre (328 yards) track and stopped to get people on board.
In May, developers released a video showing a model of the bus and said that it would be able to carry 1,200 people – with vehicles able to drive underneath it – as long as they are lower than two metres (6.5 feet).
The news agency said the bus design attracted interest from several governments including Brazil, France, India and Indonesia. Part of the bus needs further assembling, a local newspaper quoted the projects’ chief engineer as saying.
