PESHAWAR: Awami National Party Chief Asfandyar Wali Khan has expressed his concern over the harassment of Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan. A press statement issued here by the party’s central secretariat, Bacha Khan Markaz, on Friday said the harassment of Afghan refugees would lead to further deterioration of relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Asfandyar Wali said his party would not allow the harassment of Afghan refugees. He said the prevailing tension was neither in the favour of Pakistan nor Afghanistan, adding that enemies of peace would take advantage of the situation. He also lashed out at the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for pursuing a strategy to harass Afghan refugees who were staying in Pakistan under an agreement made with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). He stressed that issues between both neighbouring countries should be resolved through dialogues. Asfandyar also warned the provincial government to stop taking such actions that would lead to deterioration of Pak-Afghan relations. He appealed to the peace loving quarters in both countries to come forward and play their role in saving the region from a disaster. Meanwhile, ANP central General Secretary Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that his party believed in the supremacy of democracy and would never become part of attempts aimed at derailing democracy in the country. He said that ANP had time and again presented its stance on the floor of the parliament. He declared that his party stood with the opposition on Panama Leaks issue but “would never become part of any undemocratic move in this connection.” Referring to the murder of ANP’s former MPA at Yar Hussain in Swabi, Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that both federal and provincial government were keeping a criminal silence over the target killing of the party’s workers and activists, and criticised the PTI led government in the province over their failure to condemn the killing of ANP workers. “It seems both terrorists and PTI have the same agenda,” he claimed.
