Sir: A workshop on capacity building of biosafety technology was recently held at Islamabad, which talked at length about the potential usage of biotechnology in food production, which can improve the sector manifold.
The real benefits will be attained through generating strong awareness about the practical application of biotechnology products among general public and farmers at large. The crop biotechnology had enormous prospects as the technology has far-reaching economic, environmental, social and health benefits.
The rapid adoption of such crops in industrial and developed countries and resultant benefits clearly showed the importance of this technology. It is heartening to note that progress has been made in the field of biotech crops in the form of genes’ manipulations through exotic means. Using the technologies for crops gain positive results which include insect resistance, protection from disease, and drought soil salinity among many others. Also, there is a strong need for positive use of biotechnology for public welfare and a commitment towards safe handling of GM (genetically modified) crops.
