‘Selective’ Responsibility to Protect reflects double standards of International Community: Maleeha Lodhi

Published on: June 30, 2018 1:40 PM

NEW YORK:  Pakistan’s representative to United Nations (UN) Dr Maleeha Lodhi on Saturday condemned international community’s double standards for implementing its international responsibility to protect civilians and prevent crimes against humanity.

Lodhi while addressing the General Assembly debate on ‘Responsibility to Protect and Prevent Crimes against Humanity’ said that “selectivity” of the international community has claimed lives of innocent civilians through mass blinding and killings in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IoK).

She added that “The tragic victims in occupied Jammu and Kashmir suffer the further indignity of living under an illegal occupation”.

Pakistan’s envoy also shed light over the grave situation in Palestine where the international community had failed grossly to uphold the norms its manifests.

She criticized UN Security Council’s silent role over the spilt blood of 130  innocent Palestinians including women and children. Lodhi asserted that the UN along with the world was like a bystander to the plight of Palestinians.

The UN representative maintained the view that the international community should not be selective in its approach to condemn certain transgressions while willfully ignoring others.

Lodhi stressed that an accountability of these double standards should be done so as to why the world uses the approach of selectivity.

She added “We should neither attempt nor accept any artificial duality between the twin imperatives of legitimacy and legality”.

Pakistan’s ambassador stressed on the notion of Responsibility to Protect (R2P) which stood more than ever yet the international community has failed to keep its standards of objectivity and impartiality.

Lodhi called on the UN to implement a consistent and uniform standard by the Security Council that emphasizes on collective responsibility to prevent grave crimes against humanity.

Lodhi said that resultant actions make it evident that legal and moral legitimacy has been compromised by the body to gain wider acceptability.
