Democracy, rule of law the only way forward: Nawaz

Published on: March 24, 2018 3:58 AM

LAHORE: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif said on Friday that democracy, empowerment of parliament and the rule of law was the only way forward for a prosperous Pakistan.

In his Pakistan Day message, the PML-N supremo said that March 23 holds unparalleled importance in the history of Pakistan because it was the day when South Asian Muslims vowed to actively struggle for their independence. “The vision of the Quaid and the dream of Allama Iqbal are being accomplished,” he said, adding that the country was following the path of economic prosperity and globally emerging as a powerful entity.

Nawaz added that the nation had presented unmatched sacrifices for country’s defense and security. “Our struggle is reflected in reduced terrorism and increasing peace in the country,” he said. “We present tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives for Pakistan.”

The former prime minister said that the secret to country’s prosperity lies in a sustainable system of democracy which is based on sanctity of the public vote. “Pakistan emerged on the world map on the basis of solid determination for democracy and public vote,” he said. “We have our highest regard for those who sacrificed their lives fighting dictatorships trying to suppress democracy in the country,” he concluded.
