Google introduces selfie video sign-in feature

Google Rolls Out Selfie Video Login for Account Recovery | The Tech Buzz

Google has introduced a new selfie video verification feature for account sign-in and recovery, aiming to strengthen security and protect users from identity fraud, deepfakes and account hacking.

The new feature allows users to verify their identity by recording a short selfie video, which can be used as an alternative sign-in method or to recover access to a Google account when traditional verification options are unavailable.

According to Google, the feature has been designed to improve identity verification while making it more difficult for cybercriminals to exploit stolen credentials or use AI-generated deepfake videos to gain unauthorized access.

To activate the feature, users will need to record a brief selfie video that will be securely stored by Google. During future sign-in or account recovery attempts, users will be asked to record a live video and perform simple head movements in real time. This liveness check helps ensure that the person attempting to access the account is physically present, preventing fraud involving static images or manipulated videos.

Google said the stored selfie video will be protected through encryption, and users will have full control over their data. They can delete the saved video at any time through their Google Account dashboard if they no longer wish to use the feature.

The rollout of the selfie video verification system has already begun and will gradually become available to users worldwide over the coming weeks.

Users can enable the feature by opening their Google Account Settings, selecting Security & Sign-in, and then choosing the Selfie Video option. They will then be guided through the verification process using their smartphone or computer camera.

The introduction of the feature reflects Google’s continued efforts to enhance online security as cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated. By combining biometric verification with liveness detection, the company aims to provide users with a more secure and convenient way to protect their accounts while reducing the risk of identity theft and unauthorized access.
