The Supreme Court has granted a three-week deadline to the Islamabad and Punjab governments to submit detailed reports regarding prison meetings with the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), subsequently adjourning the hearing.
A three-member bench, headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, heard the case. During the proceedings, the Advocate General of Islamabad requested the court for time to submit a comprehensive report.
Additional Advocate General Punjab, Waseem Mumtaz Malik, raised objections regarding the maintainability of the petitions, arguing that an appeal cannot be filed against a unanimous order of the High Court.
In response, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar remarked that the court must be informed about the total number of meetings held so far and the specific dates they were arranged, directing the submission of a comprehensive report detailing these aspects.
During the hearing, Justice Mazhar noted that an assurance had been given to the Islamabad High Court that no media talks would be conducted.
He inquired whether conducting media talks outside the prison constituted a violation of that undertaking.
Counsel for the founder of PTI, Salman Akram Raja, argued that the Islamabad High Court’s order was not unanimous. Justice Mazhar countered that if the order was not unanimous, a review petition should have been filed in the High Court.
Subsequently, the Supreme Court granted three weeks to the Islamabad and Punjab governments to submit their detailed reports and adjourned the hearing.
