Khyber flash flood death toll rises to three

Published on: July 20, 2026 6:41 PM

Three people died after flash floods swept through Khyber district on Monday following heavy monsoon rains. The fatalities increased the province’s monsoon death toll as authorities issued fresh flood and landslide warnings. Rescue teams continued operations in affected areas.

According to Rescue 1122, the bodies of a woman, a man, and a child were recovered during search operations in Landi Kotal. The victims were found in Jamrud and Parang Sam. Rescue workers and local volunteers jointly carried out the recovery efforts.

Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in Landi Kotal and other parts of Khyber district. Moreover, overflowing seasonal streams swept away several vehicles, although no additional casualties were reported. Rescue officials urged residents to avoid rivers and seasonal waterways during heavy rain.

Meanwhile, rain also affected Peshawar, Nowshera, and several other districts across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), thunderstorms, strong winds, and isolated heavy rainfall are expected in many areas. Hailstorms are also possible in some locations.

The PMD warned that heavy rainfall could trigger landslides in vulnerable mountainous regions. Therefore, low-lying areas of Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda, Mardan, and Swabi remain at risk of urban flooding. Authorities also warned that strong winds and lightning could damage weak infrastructure.

Additionally, Rescue 1122 placed all district emergency services on high alert under the province’s monsoon contingency plan. Director General Shah Fahad instructed emergency teams to remain fully prepared for flooding and other weather-related incidents. Officials continue monitoring conditions across vulnerable districts.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority, at least 38 people have died and 120 have been injured since the monsoon began on June 26. Meanwhile, the PMD expects monsoon activity to intensify through July 25, increasing the risk of flash floods, urban flooding, and landslides across Pakistan.
