England miss royal balcony welcome after World Cup exit

Published on: July 16, 2026 6:08 PM

England’s men’s football team will not receive a full-squad balcony celebration at Buckingham Palace after their FIFA World Cup semifinal defeat to Argentina. Under long-standing royal traditions, such receptions and open-top bus parades along The Mall are generally reserved for teams that win major international tournaments or achieve historic milestones.

Although the team narrowly missed a place in the World Cup final, the players are still expected to receive recognition for reaching the last four of the competition. Reports suggest Prince William and Princess Catherine could welcome the squad to the palace for a private event celebrating their impressive tournament campaign.

Following England’s 2-1 semifinal defeat, Prince William praised the players in a personal message, encouraging them to keep their heads high and describing them as one of England’s strongest tournament teams. King Charles III also commended the squad, saying the Three Lions remained a source of pride for the nation despite the disappointing result.

Meanwhile, several standout players and head coach Thomas Tuchel could reportedly be considered for future New Year or King’s Birthday Honours. Those selected would later receive individual awards, such as MBEs or OBEs, during official ceremonies held at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle.

In contrast, England’s women’s football team has received major royal celebrations after historic achievements in recent years. The Lionesses were honoured with a homecoming celebration following their Euro 2025 triumph, while previous successful England teams have also been welcomed to royal residences after memorable international performances.
