PM Shehbaz meets UN chief candidate

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met former Senegalese president and United Nations secretary-general candidate Macky Sall on Friday, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and strong support for the United Nations. The meeting focused on the UN’s role in addressing global challenges through peace, development, and human rights. It comes as candidates intensify diplomatic engagement ahead of the selection of the next UN chief.

During the meeting at the Prime Minister’s House, Shehbaz welcomed Sall and reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to the United Nations. He expressed hope that the next UN secretary-general would strengthen the organization’s three core pillars of international peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights. The prime minister emphasized the importance of balanced and effective global leadership.

Shehbaz also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. He stressed the importance of implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions in both letter and spirit. The prime minister further highlighted respect for international law and treaties as essential for promoting global peace, security, and prosperity.

Macky Sall praised Pakistan’s longstanding contributions to the United Nations and acknowledged its constructive role in promoting international peace and multilateral cooperation. He commended Pakistan’s continued engagement with the UN on key global issues. Both sides discussed the importance of strengthening international cooperation to address shared global challenges.

The meeting took place as prospective candidates continue diplomatic outreach before the selection of the next UN secretary-general. Pakistan remains an active supporter of multilateral diplomacy and has consistently advocated for a stronger and more effective United Nations. The interaction underscores Islamabad’s continued engagement with international institutions and global governance.
