Lionel Messi inspires stunning Argentina comeback against Egypt

Published on: July 8, 2026 8:29 PM

Lionel Messi produced another unforgettable performance as Argentina overturned a two-goal deficit to defeat Egypt and secure a place in the World Cup quarterfinals. The defending champions looked close to elimination before Messi transformed the match with a brilliant spell lasting just 259 seconds. His goal and decisive assist completely changed the contest and kept Argentina’s title hopes alive.

Argentina struggled for much of the round of 16 encounter as Egypt held a commanding 2-0 lead entering the closing stages of the match. However, Messi sparked the comeback in the 79th minute with a perfectly placed cross that found Cristian Romero, whose powerful header reduced the deficit. That breakthrough lifted Argentina’s confidence and shifted the momentum firmly in their favour.

Only minutes later, Messi produced another moment of brilliance by driving through Egypt’s defence before scoring the equaliser. The captain made up for an earlier missed penalty with a calm finish that restored hope for the reigning world champions. His quick impact demonstrated why he remains one of football’s most influential players during the biggest occasions.

Argentina completed the remarkable turnaround deep into stoppage time when Lautaro Martínez delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area. Enzo Fernández met the cross with a decisive header to seal victory and book Argentina’s place in the next round. Although Fernández scored the winning goal, Messi’s leadership and creativity proved decisive throughout the comeback.

His goal, assist, and overall control during a remarkable 259-second spell inspired one of Argentina’s finest World Cup recoveries. With renewed confidence and momentum, the defending champions now advance to the quarterfinals, where they will continue their pursuit of another world title.
