Anurag Kashyap supports Satluj amid film ban debate

Published on: July 8, 2026 6:48 PM

Anurag Kashyap has voiced support for Satluj, saying the controversy surrounding the film has increased his interest in watching it. The filmmaker argued that banning or restricting films often creates greater public curiosity instead of reducing audience interest. His comments have added fresh momentum to the ongoing discussion about censorship and creative freedom in cinema.

Sharing his views on social media, Kashyap said he had not originally planned to watch the film but changed his mind after learning about the controversy. He suggested that restrictions often encourage people to discover the reasons behind them rather than discouraging viewership. His remarks came shortly after the film became available on the streaming platform following years of release delays.

Veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma also praised the film after watching it, describing it as an emotional portrayal of a painful period in history. He commended Diljit Dosanjh for delivering a restrained and thoughtful performance while also appreciating Arjun Rampal for his role. According to Varma, the film presents difficult historical events with emotional depth instead of relying on traditional heroic storytelling.

Directed by Honey Trehan, Satluj tells the story of Punjabi human rights activist Jaswant Singh through a biographical drama. The project was originally planned for a theatrical release but encountered certification challenges before finally premiering on July 3. Its release has renewed public interest in both the film and the issues it portrays.

Meanwhile, Kashyap continues working on new film projects following his recent collaboration with Bobby Deol in the crime thriller Bandar. The debate surrounding Satluj has also revived wider conversations about artistic expression, censorship, and the role of films in presenting sensitive historical subjects. Industry observers believe the attention generated by the controversy may further expand the film’s audience.
