King Charles reveals historic tax details, chooses clarence house

Published on: June 26, 2026 2:24 PM

King Charles has become the first reigning British monarch to publicly disclose his personal tax payments, marking a historic step toward greater financial transparency. Palace officials revealed that the King has paid more than £30 million, equivalent to over $41 million, in personal taxes since ascending the throne in 2022. The announcement comes amid growing public debate over the royal family’s financial arrangements and the use of public funds.

At the same time, royal officials confirmed that King Charles and Queen Camilla will not move into Buckingham Palace after its £369 million taxpayer-funded renovation is completed. Instead, the couple will continue living at Clarence House, making it their permanent official residence. Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace will remain the primary venue for major royal events and official state functions.

According to royal aides, Buckingham Palace will continue serving as the operational headquarters of the monarchy by hosting state visits, investitures, official audiences, receptions and the traditional royal garden parties. Therefore, despite the King’s decision to remain at Clarence House, the historic palace will continue playing a central role in Britain’s constitutional and ceremonial affairs.

Meanwhile, Prince William also released new financial details regarding the Duchy of Cornwall, outlining a long-term investment strategy focused on housing, environmental projects and local communities. The ten-year plan includes approximately £500 million in funding aimed at supporting sustainable development across five regions under the Duchy’s management.

Furthermore, the annual report revealed that the Duchy of Cornwall receives around £1.5 million each year in rent from Dartmoor Prison. Prince William said those funds will support projects designed to improve local communities and strengthen regional development. Together, the latest financial disclosures signal a broader effort by senior members of the royal family to increase transparency and demonstrate greater public accountability.
