FIH Issues Formal Apology Over Pakistan Flag Error; PHF Receives Official Letter as Pakistan Lose 4-3 in London Thriller

Published on: June 23, 2026 10:44 PM

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has issued an unreserved and formal apology after Pakistan’s national flag was incorrectly displayed during the FIH Hockey Pro League match in London, an incident that drew widespread attention and concern.
According to details, the Pakistani flag was presented without its distinctive white portion before the match, prompting criticism from fans and observers. The matter quickly gained traction on social media and overshadowed the high-profile encounter.
In a significant development, FIH Hockey Pro League Director Hilary Atkinson sent an official letter to Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani, expressing deep regret over the incident and extending an unconditional apology.
In the letter, Atkinson stated: “We take full responsibility for this operational error and apologise unreservedly. We fully understand that a team’s flag is a vital symbol of identity, pride, and representation. We deeply regret any offense this may have caused to the Pakistani team, their supporters, the people of Pakistan, and the National Federation.”
The letter further emphasised that FIH is reviewing its internal procedures and operational processes to ensure that such mistakes do not occur in the future. The FIH official also requested the PHF President to kindly accept the federation’s sincere apology.
Appreciating Pakistan’s participation in the Pro League, Atkinson acknowledged the team’s commitment throughout the season and reiterated FIH’s principle of treating all teams with equal respect and professionalism. She also assured that the federation remains open to further communication on the matter at any time.
Earlier, FIH had also released a public statement echoing similar sentiments, confirming that it had accepted full responsibility for the error and had already sent an official apology to the Pakistan Hockey Federation.
On the field, the match itself was a closely contested affair. Pakistan displayed resilience and determination but ultimately fell short, losing 4-3 after an intense battle. Despite a spirited performance, crucial defensive lapses at key moments proved costly.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of respecting national symbols in international sporting events, while also raising questions about operational standards in global competitions.
