Erdogan, Iraqi PM discuss stronger cooperation and regional issues

Erdoğan, Iraqi PM discuss bilateral ties and regional issues

Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi held a telephone conversation to discuss bilateral relations, regional developments and opportunities for deeper cooperation between their countries.

According to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, the two leaders exchanged views on a range of regional and global issues while reaffirming their commitment to strengthening ties between Ankara and Baghdad.

During the call, President Erdogan said Türkiye wants to further advance its relationship with Iraq in the coming period, particularly in key sectors such as energy, defence and transportation. He noted that both countries have significant potential to expand cooperation and pursue mutually beneficial projects.

Erdogan also extended an invitation to Prime Minister al-Zaidi to visit Türkiye for comprehensive talks aimed at enhancing bilateral relations and exploring new areas of partnership.

The conversation comes shortly after al-Zaidi assumed office following the approval of his government by Iraq’s Council of Representatives earlier this month. His appointment marks the beginning of a new phase in relations between the neighboring countries, which share strong economic, security and political interests.

Türkiye and Iraq have worked closely in recent years on a variety of issues, including border security, trade, infrastructure development and water management. One of the major projects connecting the two countries is the Development Road Project, which aims to improve regional connectivity and boost economic growth through enhanced transportation links.

The leaders also discussed ongoing regional challenges. The phone call took place amid diplomatic efforts surrounding US-Iran talks and continuing concerns over the situations in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria.

Security cooperation remains another important aspect of relations between Ankara and Baghdad. The two countries have coordinated efforts against the PKK and have emphasized the importance of maintaining stability along their shared border.

Analysts view Erdogan’s invitation to the Iraqi prime minister as a sign of Ankara’s intention to deepen strategic cooperation with Baghdad while coordinating more closely on regional developments. The proposed visit is expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss economic initiatives, security matters and broader regional challenges affecting the Middle East.
