Germany has rejected the idea of a permanent Israeli military presence on Lebanese territory, amid rising tensions following Israeli statements on continued operations in the region. The stance is significant as European powers increasingly voice concern over escalation in the Middle East conflict. It adds diplomatic pressure on Israel regarding its military posture in Lebanon.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Giese said Germany firmly opposes any long-term Israeli occupation of Lebanese land. He stressed that civilians must not be prevented from returning to their homes. His remarks were delivered during a press briefing in Berlin on Monday.
Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius also reaffirmed Germany’s support for Lebanon’s territorial integrity. He emphasized that respecting sovereignty remains a core principle of German foreign policy. The statements reflect a coordinated diplomatic message from Berlin.
The comments came after Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israeli forces would not withdraw from what he called a security zone in southern Lebanon. He also stated that Israeli troops face no restrictions in operations aimed at removing threats. These remarks followed a major escalation involving more than 200 strikes in Lebanon.
The developments come as international actors react to broader regional tensions linked to ongoing diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Iran. An interim agreement had called for halting hostilities across multiple fronts, including Lebanon. However, conflicting positions continue to challenge prospects for de-escalation.
