Alhamra to commemorate the legacy of Karbala through arts and reflection

Published on: June 20, 2026 3:00 PM

In reverent observance of the sacred month of Muharram-ul-Haram, the Lahore Arts Council, Alhamra, will host a distinguished cultural and intellectual gathering titled “The Expression of Karbala in the Arts” on Tuesday, June 23, at 5:00 p.m. in Alhamra Hall No. 1.

The event is being organized to pay tribute to the unparalleled sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain Ibn-e Ali and his devoted companions, whose steadfast commitment to truth, justice and human dignity continues to inspire hearts across generations and geographical boundaries. Through the language of art, literature and scholarship, the programme seeks to illuminate the universal message of Karbala. This message transcends time and speaks to humanity’s enduring struggle against oppression, injustice and moral compromise.

The evening will feature thought-provoking addresses by renowned artist Waseem Abbas and scholars Dr. Murtaza Jafri and Zulqarnain Farooq, who will explore the historical, spiritual, and cultural dimensions of the tragedy of Karbala and its profound influence on human thought and artistic expression. Acclaimed playwright, intellectual and literary figure Dr Asghar Nadeem Syed will serve as the moderator of the session.

Adding a deeply moving artistic dimension to the programme, a special recitation of elegiac poetry will be presented by distinguished artists Ustad Hamid Ali Khan, Nayab Ali Khan and Inam Ali Khan. Their performances are expected to offer a poignant tribute to the martyrs of Karbala and reflect the emotional depth with which this historic event continues to resonate in the collective consciousness of the Muslim world.

Speaking about the significance of the event, Executive Director Alhamra Muhammad Nawaz Gondal stated, “Karbala is not merely a chapter of history; it is an eternal lesson in courage, sacrifice, patience, steadfastness, and unwavering commitment to truth. Through such meaningful engagements, we seek to acquaint younger generations with the noble values exemplified by Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), values that continue to illuminate the path of humanity.”

By bringing together scholars, artists, writers, and members of the public, Alhamra aims to create a space for reflection and remembrance in which the enduring spirit of Karbala may be understood not only as a historical event but also as a timeless symbol of resistance to injustice and devotion to higher principles. The programme promises to be a profound tribute to one of the most significant events in human history, reaffirming the enduring relevance of Karbala’s message through the transformative power of art and culture.
