NA resolution describes Pakistan as trusted, neutral mediator globally

Published on: June 20, 2026 2:29 PM

The National Assembly on Friday unanimously passed a resolution recognising Pakistan’s efforts in facilitating a peace agreement between the US and Iran, saying the country’s role had established it as a trusted and neutral mediator on the global stage.

The resolution, moved by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, acknowledged what it described as Pakistan’s sincere and tireless diplomatic efforts that led to the US-Iran peace agreement.

The House appreciated the role played by PM Shehbaz Sharif, DPM Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and the entire team involved in the negotiations.

The resolution said the NA noted “with immense satisfaction and pride” the diplomatic breakthrough that resulted in the cessation of hostilities and the signing of an agreement aimed at promoting peace and stability between the United States and Iran.

The House also congratulated the leadership of Iran and the United States on signing what it described as a historic peace agreement.

Earlier, addressing the parliament, the PM expressed confidence that Pakistan and Iran would enter a new era of prosperity, economic cooperation and stronger bilateral relations following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States.

The premier said Pakistan had earned global recognition for its role in facilitating the peace agreement, calling it a moment of pride for the nation.

“Pakistan is being acknowledged around the world for helping bring about this peace deal,” the prime minister said, adding that the achievement reflected the country’s growing diplomatic stature.

PM Shehbaz said Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir had played the most crucial role in securing a global peace agreement and had worked tirelessly over the past two to three months.

He also credited Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for their contributions, saying there had been several moments when negotiations appeared close to collapse.

The prime minister congratulated opposition lawmakers as well as PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, President Asif Ali Zardari and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

PM Shehbaz told parliament that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian telephoned him on Thursday to thank Pakistan and had specifically acknowledged Field Marshal Munir’s role.

The prime minister said he had invited Pezeshkian to visit Pakistan and that the invitation had been accepted. He added that the Iranian president had invited Pakistan to attend the funeral of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and that a Pakistani delegation would participate.

Meanwhile, Shehbaz thanked Saudi Arabia for its “steadfast support” to Pakistan’s peace efforts, according to an official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The prime minister made this remark during a high-level telephone conversation with Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman.

During the call, PM Shehbaz congratulated the Saudi leadership on the signing of the “Islamabad Peace Deal,” describing it as a significant step forward in regional diplomacy.

He said Saudi Arabia’s “wise leadership” and consistent commitment to regional peace and stability had played an important role throughout the recent crisis, the statement added.

Both sides agreed that the next phase of negotiations must continue to be guided by dialogue, diplomacy, and vigilance against any attempts to undermine the peace process.

The prime minister also expressed satisfaction over the strong state of Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relations and reiterated Pakistan’s desire to further strengthen economic cooperation under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 framework.

The conversation comes amid continued diplomatic engagement between Islamabad and Riyadh on regional stability and expanding bilateral cooperation.

Separately, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammed Ishaq Dar Friday spoke with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the two leaders exchanged views on regional developments and highlighted the ceasefire violations conducted by Israel in Lebanon, expressing serious concern over the situation.

Araghchi also thanked Dar for Pakistan’s facilitation in the repatriation of 30 Iranian nationals, including 8 fishermen rescued at sea by the United Kingdom and 22 crew members recently interdicted by the United States.
