At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured in a mass shooting in an informal settlement near Johannesburg, South African police said, prompting a large-scale manhunt for more than 10 suspects.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the attack occurred late Tuesday night at around 11 p.m. in the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, a suburb of Johannesburg. Authorities said the attackers arrived in a white van and launched a coordinated assault on residents.
Police stated that the group split into multiple directions after entering the settlement through different access points, opening fire on people at several locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.
Eight men and three women were declared dead at the scene, while a 13th victim later died in hospital due to severe gunshot wounds. Nine additional victims were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that no arrests have yet been made. A manhunt is underway for the suspects, who are believed to number more than 10 individuals. Investigators from provincial and district detective units, along with crime intelligence and forensic teams, have been deployed to trace those responsible.
Police described the incident as one of the most severe outbreaks of violence in the area in recent months. Authorities have not yet indicated whether the attack was gang-related or linked to any broader criminal network.
The shooting has raised fresh concerns about violent crime in South Africa’s urban settlements, where overcrowding, poverty and limited policing resources often contribute to insecurity. Community members have called for increased police presence and stronger protection measures following the attack.
Officials said further updates will be provided as investigations continue and urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in identifying the attackers.
