Punjab seeks army for Muharram security

Published on: June 8, 2026 5:02 PM

Punjab has requested the deployment of Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel for Muharram security across the province. The move aims to strengthen protection measures amid prevailing security concerns and potential threats. Millions of mourners, religious gatherings, and processions are expected to be affected by the arrangements.

The Punjab Home Department formally approached the Interior Ministry on June 4, seeking approval for troop deployment. Officials said the request followed recommendations from the Punjab police chief. According to the department, a comprehensive security mechanism is necessary to prevent any terrorist activity or disruption during Muharram.

The province has requested 137 companies of security personnel, including 61 Army companies and 76 Rangers companies. The deployment has been sought across at least 37 districts. Major districts included in the request are Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Bahawalpur, and Dera Ghazi Khan. Authorities have planned deployments between Muharram 1 and Muharram 12.

Meanwhile, the Home Department has issued detailed security guidelines to police and civil administration officials. The instructions emphasize heightened vigilance, protection of sensitive locations, and coordination among law enforcement agencies. Authorities have also directed officials to ensure timely intelligence sharing and maintain security even in remote areas.

Separately, Punjab Inspector General Abdul Kareem reviewed Muharram security preparations at the Central Police Office. He acknowledged that maintaining security during Muharram has become increasingly challenging. The police chief urged officers to perform their duties with dedication and ensure peaceful observance of religious events throughout the province.
