Nawaz Sharif vows development projects for Gilgit-Baltistan

Published on: June 2, 2026 2:31 PM

GILGIT: President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Nawaz Sharif, has said his party seeks public support based on its performance rather than criticism of political opponents, while promising to address infrastructure and development challenges in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Addressing an election rally in Gilgit, Nawaz Sharif said he was saddened by the condition of roads and public infrastructure in the region. Recalling his visits to Gilgit and Skardu during his tenure as prime minister, he said he had envisioned significant progress for the area but was disappointed to see many projects remain incomplete.

He questioned why key infrastructure schemes, including the road linking Mansehra and Gilgit, had not been completed despite years of planning. While avoiding direct criticism of rival political parties, he urged authorities to explain why development initiatives had been neglected.

Nawaz Sharif said the PML-N had undertaken major projects in Gilgit-Baltistan, including hospitals, hydropower plants and development schemes in various districts. He maintained that his party’s record of public service remained its strongest asset during elections.

The former prime minister also highlighted the need to expand air connectivity in the region. He said the existing Gilgit airport should be upgraded to accommodate larger aircraft and promised to discuss the matter with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Referring to persistent electricity shortages, Nawaz Sharif said a region rich in water resources and solar potential should not face prolonged load-shedding. He pledged to work toward improving power generation and distribution if his party forms the government.

He also announced proposals for housing support, interest-free loans for youth, scholarships, laptop schemes and the establishment of a women’s university. Additionally, he reiterated his commitment to completing major projects such as the Diamer-Bhasha Dam, saying its completion would benefit both Gilgit-Baltistan and the rest of the country.
