The government said the decision was made in recognition of Khan’s professional expertise, leadership, and contributions to national security during a period marked by evolving security challenges and increasing operational demands for intelligence institutions.

Fawad Asadullah Khan was appointed IB chief on April 21, 2022. His appointment was considered significant in the history of the organisation as he became the first officer from the intelligence cadre to be promoted to Grade 22 before being elevated to the top post of the bureau.

Officials stated that Khan’s career spans nearly four decades in operational and strategic intelligence. During this time, he has served in several important assignments and developed extensive experience in intelligence operations and internal security matters.

The statement further highlighted that his leadership has played an important role in strengthening the institution amid changing regional and domestic security dynamics. The extension is being viewed as an effort to maintain continuity within the country’s civilian intelligence framework.

Throughout his career, Khan has also received several national honours for his services. In 1996, he was awarded the Tamgha-e-Shujaat, followed by the Sitara-e-Shujaat in 2017.

More recently, he was conferred the Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 2025 for his services during Maarka-e-Haq, adding to a distinguished record in Pakistan’s intelligence and security sector.
