Gaza mosques announce martyrdom of Hamas military commander

Published on: May 17, 2026 1:07 PM

Mosques across Gaza City announced the martyrdom of senior Hamas military commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad following recent Israeli airstrikes targeting northern Gaza. The announcements came a day after the Israeli military claimed it had carried out operations against the head of Hamas’ armed wing. Moreover, the development has intensified attention on the ongoing conflict and rising tensions throughout the Gaza Strip.

Witnesses reported that mosques in several areas of Gaza City used loudspeakers to inform residents about Haddad’s martyrdom after the reported Israeli strike. However, Hamas had not immediately released an official statement confirming details regarding the fate of its senior military leader at the time of the announcements. Meanwhile, residents gathered in different neighbourhoods as news of the reported killing spread rapidly across the densely populated territory.

The Israeli military earlier stated that its forces had launched targeted airstrikes aimed at senior Hamas leadership positions during ongoing operations in northern Gaza. Israeli authorities have continued intensifying military campaigns in recent months, arguing that such operations target command structures and militant infrastructure within the enclave. Furthermore, repeated strikes have contributed to growing humanitarian concerns as civilians remain trapped amid escalating violence and destruction.

The reported martyrdom of Izz al-Din al-Haddad could mark another major development in the prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has already caused widespread casualties and displacement. Analysts believe the loss of senior commanders may influence military strategies and operational planning inside Gaza during the continuing confrontation. Additionally, regional observers warn that further escalation could deepen instability across the broader Middle East.

International organisations and humanitarian groups have repeatedly called for restraint and immediate efforts towards de-escalation as fighting continues across Gaza and surrounding areas. The conflict has severely affected civilian infrastructure, including homes, hospitals and public facilities, while thousands of families continue facing shortages of food, medicine and shelter. Consequently, global diplomatic pressure is increasing on all sides to pursue ceasefire negotiations and humanitarian relief measures.
