Govt launches QR code system for electricity subsidy verification

Published on: May 7, 2026 6:41 PM

The government has introduced a new digital verification system requiring subsidised electricity consumers to register through QR codes printed on monthly bills to continue receiving relief. Authorities say the initiative aims to improve transparency, reduce misuse of subsidies, and ensure targeted support for eligible households across the country.

According to the Power Division, electricity distribution companies DISCOs Pakistan have started clearly mentioning the exact subsidy amount on consumer bills each month. Officials said this step allows consumers to easily track government-provided relief and better understand how much support they are receiving under the programme.

Moreover, the Power Division explained that a QR code has now been added to electricity bills, enabling consumers to scan and register through an online system. Once scanned, users are directed to a digital portal where they can complete verification and ensure continued access to subsidised electricity benefits.

Furthermore, officials clarified that the registration process is designed specifically to protect low-income and low-electricity-consuming households. They emphasized that the system is not intended to reduce or remove subsidies but to ensure that financial assistance reaches only those who genuinely qualify for government support.

Additionally, the government reiterated that its primary objective remains the protection of poor and middle-income consumers despite ongoing fiscal and economic pressures. Authorities stressed that public funds must be used efficiently, and the QR-based system will help prevent leakage and ensure fair distribution of electricity subsidies.

Meanwhile, consumers have been urged to complete the QR code registration process without delay to avoid any disruption in subsidy benefits. The Power Division also advised users facing billing issues or technical difficulties to contact their respective electricity distribution company helplines for assistance and resolution of complaints.
