“Responsibility for diplomatic engagement with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will transfer to the US Embassy in Islamabad,” the statement said. It added that US policy priorities in Pakistan remain unchanged, particularly in areas of economic cooperation, regional security, and people-to-people ties.
The State Department also clarified that its diplomatic network in Pakistan will continue to operate through its remaining missions in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore. Officials said the restructuring is intended to streamline operations while maintaining core diplomatic objectives in the country.
Reports had previously suggested that the closure had been under consideration for over a year, with potential cost savings estimated at $7.5 million annually. The restructuring is reportedly part of broader administrative adjustments initiated during recent federal downsizing efforts in the United States.
The announcement comes amid a complex regional security environment and follows earlier disruptions affecting US diplomatic facilities in Pakistan. However, US officials have stated that the decision is not directly linked to any recent geopolitical developments.
The closure marks a significant shift in US diplomatic presence in northwestern Pakistan, where the Peshawar consulate had served as a key point of engagement for years, particularly on security, development, and regional cooperation issues.
