Grant Harrold, who previously served as a butler to King Charles, said palace staff were highly enthusiastic when Meghan became engaged to Prince Harry, with many viewing her arrival as the start of a new chapter for the royal family.
Speaking in a recent interview, Harrold recalled that there was significant optimism within royal circles about Meghan joining the institution.
According to him, Meghan was widely seen as someone who could successfully take on royal duties and bring a modern dimension to the monarchy.
Harrold said many inside the palace believed Harry and Meghan’s marriage represented the beginning of an “amazing fairy tale” and a positive evolution for the family.
However, he suggested that royal life may not have matched Meghan’s expectations.
He noted that transitioning from life in the United States into the British royal institution could have been challenging, describing the monarchy as highly structured, demanding, and governed by strict traditions.
While acknowledging there is an enjoyable side to royal life, Harrold said the role also involves long hours, intense schedules, and a disciplined working environment. His comments come as speculation continues over whether Prince Harry and Meghan could eventually rebuild ties with the royal family after years of strained relations.
Reports have suggested that King Charles remains open to reconciliation with his younger son, particularly as the royal family faces a shortage of senior working members. No official confirmation has been given regarding any possible return of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to formal royal duties.

Harrold also reflected on Prince Harry’s departure from royal life, saying it was still surprising given how much Harry had appeared to value his former responsibilities. The remarks have reignited public discussion around Meghan’s time within the monarchy and the challenges she faced as a working royal.
