King Charles keeps composure as Trump breaks royal protocol

Published on: April 28, 2026 3:56 PM

King Charles III maintained calm dignity during a historic state visit to the White House as Donald Trump and Melania Trump welcomed the British monarch and Queen Camilla for a formal reception in Washington. The meeting marked a significant diplomatic moment as both couples greeted each other on the White House South Lawn before moving inside for official engagements.

During the welcoming ceremony, Trump greeted the 77-year-old monarch with a firm handshake while Melania offered Queen Camilla a customary greeting by kissing her on both cheeks. The two couples then paused briefly for photographers, smiling and exchanging remarks before turning toward the entrance to begin the scheduled reception inside the presidential residence.

However, a moment that quickly drew attention occurred as the leaders walked indoors when President Trump lightly placed his hand on King Charles’ right arm while guiding him toward the doorway. Royal etiquette traditionally discourages initiating physical contact with members of the monarchy unless the royal begins the gesture, making the move widely discussed among protocol observers.

Experts in body language and royal customs suggested the action appeared less like a mistake and more like a friendly political signal between two leaders. Analysts argued the gesture conveyed a sense of informal familiarity and attempted to highlight what Trump has often described as a close personal relationship with the British monarch.

Nevertheless, King Charles appeared unfazed by the brief breach of protocol and maintained a composed demeanour throughout the encounter, continuing the visit without visible reaction. Observers noted that the monarch has previously shown a relaxed approach toward such interactions compared with his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who was known for strictly observing traditional royal etiquette.

The encounter also revived memories of earlier moments when Trump initiated physical gestures during meetings with members of the British royal family. Despite occasional protocol missteps, both sides emphasised the importance of the visit as a symbol of enduring diplomatic ties between the United States and the United Kingdom.
