Anne Hathaway’s inshallah remark sparks global religious debate

Published on: April 22, 2026 5:48 PM

Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway sparked widespread discussion after using the word “Inshallah” during a recent interview while promoting her upcoming film The Devil Wears Prada 2. The remark quickly went viral on social media, leading many fans to question her religious beliefs and cultural background following the unexpected moment in her conversation.

During the interview, Hathaway spoke about her hopes for a long and healthy life, expressing optimism about the future. She added the word “Inshallah,” which immediately caught public attention, as many viewers associated the expression with Muslim cultural and religious usage across different regions of the world.

The term “Inshallah” is commonly used by Muslims and translates to “If God wills,” reflecting a belief that future events depend on divine will. It is often used when expressing hope or planning ahead, showing humility and acceptance of outcomes beyond human control in everyday conversation.

Following the viral clip, speculation grew online about whether Hathaway had converted to Islam or followed Islamic practices. However, public information confirms that she does not identify as Muslim and has not adopted any formal religious affiliation in her personal life or public statements.

Reports note that Hathaway was raised in a Roman Catholic household and later experienced brief exposure to Episcopalian traditions during her family’s religious transition. She has also participated in cultural and religious events connected to her husband Adam Shulman’s Jewish background, while maintaining a flexible personal outlook on spirituality.

In previous interviews, Hathaway described herself as spiritual but not strictly religious, explaining that her beliefs continue to evolve over time. She emphasized a personal journey of understanding rather than formal religious identity, which she once described as being “a work in progress” when discussing faith and life perspectives.
