Pakistan welcomed Lebanon ceasefire, urges lasting peace

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon, calling it a positive step towards regional stability and long-term peace.

In a statement, the prime minister said that diplomatic efforts led under the leadership of US President Donald Trump had contributed to facilitating the ceasefire agreement between the parties involved. He described the development as a constructive move towards reducing tensions in the Middle East.

Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope that the ceasefire would pave the way for durable and sustainable peace in the region, adding that Pakistan supports all efforts aimed at de-escalation and dialogue.

The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon, stating that Islamabad would continue to stand by the Lebanese people in line with its principled foreign policy stance.

He further said that Pakistan would continue to support all diplomatic and political initiatives aimed at achieving lasting peace in conflict-affected regions, emphasising the importance of international cooperation in resolving disputes.

The statement comes amid reports of a 10-day ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, following broader regional diplomatic efforts. According to reports, US officials held discussions with both sides to help secure the temporary truce.

US President Donald Trump said he had spoken with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and confirmed that both countries had agreed to the ceasefire arrangement.

Iranian officials also reportedly acknowledged Pakistan’s role in facilitating diplomatic engagement in the broader regional context, highlighting Islamabad’s increasing involvement in mediation efforts.

Observers say the development reflects a broader push for stability in the Middle East, although the durability of the ceasefire will depend on continued diplomatic engagement and compliance by all parties.
