Pakistan is set to receive financial and technical support from the Asian Development Bank for solar transition and power sector reforms. The support will focus on battery storage, digitisation, and improved planning across the energy system. These efforts aim to strengthen energy security, reduce costs, and benefit consumers and industry nationwide.
The development emerged during a meeting in Islamabad between Power Minister Sardar Awais Khan Leghari and ADB Country Director Emma Xiaoqin Fan. Officials discussed ongoing reforms and future cooperation in the energy sector. The bank signaled strong interest in supporting modernisation efforts, including data governance and institutional improvements. This comes ahead of a planned visit by the ADB vice president later this month.

Moreover, the ADB is conducting studies on rooftop solar expansion and battery energy storage systems in Pakistan. These studies aim to assess the impact of renewable integration on the national grid. The bank is also providing technical assistance for advanced metering infrastructure. Such measures are expected to improve efficiency and transparency in electricity distribution.
Meanwhile, the government highlighted recent resilience in the power sector despite global energy challenges. Officials attributed this progress to increased reliance on local resources like coal, hydropower, and solar energy. The minister emphasized reducing electricity costs by expanding indigenous energy sources. He also stressed the need for skilled professionals to drive reforms through transparent training programs.

In addition, discussions covered restructuring the National Grid Company and boosting private investment in transmission. The government has engaged the Pakistan Business Council to support this effort. Both sides agreed to maintain close cooperation for a modern and sustainable energy system.
